The Green Room is one of François Truffaut's darkest and most tragic films. It follows Julien Davenne, a journalist who served 11 years ago as an artillery operator in World War One. A year after he returned from the Great War, his wife died. Having lost so many friends and loved ones in such a small amount of time, he becomes obsessed with death. He keeps all of his dead wife's mementos in a small green room in his house. However, after the room accidentally catches fire, he moves them all into a renovated chapel. He transforms the small room into a shrine for the dead. Julien Davenne is a tragic figure who is so obsessed with death that he is unable to truly live. He is so concerned with those who have died that he can't appreciate those around him, such as Cecilia Mandel, a like-minded auctioneer's assistant. But much like Julien Davenne, the film itself seems devoid of life. There is a certain coldness and sterility to the sets and acting that it seems as pale as a freshly deceased corpse. The Green Room is a bleak film bereft of the charm that infects Truffaut's other works and makes them so endearing.
